Third-Party Testing: What Does That Actually Mean?

Hi everybody! Thought I'd kick off the Deep Dives & Discoveries channel with something I like digging into in my own research: third-party testing claims! Here's the thing — "third-party tested" sounds official, but the phrase, in my research, has no legal definition. Nothing requires a tester to be accredited, qualified, or even independent in any meaningful sense, from what I'm reading. For what I see, a label tells you there could be a third party person, maybe a retired scientist who lives next door, has friends in the field, and has some certifications and can sign off on something. I'm not saying that's true, that's just my own theory from my research. What actually means something is a real Certificate of Analysis that names the lab, ideally one accredited under ISO (the international standard proving a lab's testing is technically legitimate), with batch-specific results for potency and contaminants. Recognized certification marks like NSF (independent nonprofit safety certification), USP (United States Pharmacopeia purity standards), or Informed-Sport (batch testing for banned substances) carry more weight than the bare phrase "third-party tested." Curious what you all have noticed in your own research, your own shopping, or your own fields — how do you personally vet a testing claim before you trust it? :))
